He was born on November 15, 1931 in the town of Wilson in Sheboygan County, son of the late Henry and Emma (Ardts) Kurscheidt. Bernard attended St. George Catholic School and helped on the family farm. Following school he drove truck for Lakeside Canning Company in Sheboygan. He served in the United States Army, 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Bernard was heavily decorated for his service before an honorable discharge. He assisted Valeria with 4-H leadership for the Working Woodchucks 4-H Club. Bernard also served as assessor for the town of Brothertown.
