Gilbert J. Portmann, age 91, died at home on Thursday, November 23, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Gibby was born on February 27, 1926 in rural Chilton, son of Henry and Mary (See) Portmann.  He married Mary M. DeLain on June 30, 1973.  He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Parish.

Gibby farmed for 23 years in the town of Eaton, after which he worked for Riesterer and Schnell Implement and Sperber & Krueger Lumber Co., the latter as a foreman for 19 years retiring in 1987. He then started his own Semi-Trucking business and fully retired at age 78.

Gibby and Mary made faith and their family a priority during his lifetime and they worked to instill a strong work ethic in their four sons.  His other passions included gardening and woodworking, both on his farm and in Maui, HI, where he and Mary spent the winter months.  His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, where his family and close friends gathered for the past 44 years.  God smiled on him this past Thanksgiving, calling him to eternal life, surrounded by family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Mary; sons Blake and wife Jessica; Reid and fiancé Zerny Brommels; David and wife Sheri; Lee and wife Amanda; along with 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Romilda Kuhn and Eileen Moehn; one brother Andrew; brother-in-law Darryl and Carol DeLain, sister-in-law Darlene Hoffman along with nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary, one brother Norbert and sister Delphine.

Funeral service will be at 11:30 am on Monday, November 27, 2017 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church (413 Fremont St.) in Kiel with close family friend, Rev. Michael Burns officiating.  Friends may call at the church from 9:00 am until 11:15 am on Monday, November  27, 2017.

I knew him for only a little over a decade, but what an awesome friend and a model for the fruits of hard work at a young age. Gibby was a very special man in so many ways. I was privilege two see him twice in the last 10 days of his life... his mind was very alert and he was so impressively positive and still had his admirable humor. The memories of our week long stay in Hawaii with Mary & Gibby are some of our fondest memories. So grateful for all the quiet conversations and special times.
