Thomas J Koehler
Chilton, WI

Thomas J. Koehler, age 64, of Chilton, died on January 29, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.  He was born on June 17, 1953 in Fond du Lac, son of the late LeRoy and Kathryn Koehler.  He grew up farming on the homestead in Charlestown and was proud of the church and school that was St. Martin Catholic Church and School.  The Koehler family helped start the church in 1866, and Tom was in the last class to graduate from St. Martin School in 1967.

Tom attended Chilton High School and married his high school sweetheart Cheryl Mertz on March 2, 1973 at the former, St. Martin Catholic Church in Charlestown.

Tom was a hard working man who held several jobs throughout his life, but he always remained a true farmer.  In 1972, he purchased "The Koehler Ranch" on Hickory Hills road where Cheryl joined him after their wedding.  In addition to the farm, he spent time working at New Holstein's Tecumseh Products and later for Lunda Construction where he learned the very useful skill of swinging a hammer with both hands and other construction techniques.  He also helped other farmers through the skills he learned as an AI Tech for Select Sire/Sire Power.   In April of 2016, the dairy cows moved off the ranch, but Tom still liked to run his land and take care of the crops through his last years.

Tom had a lot of talks with his family about life, politics, and the latest news while they milked in the barn .  He was an analytical thinker and wanted to help his loved ones discover an answer to a problem through discussion and self discovery.  If one of his children were in the wrong, Tom may have shook a fist to get them in the right direction again. He also was not afraid to discuss his opinions on farming and how things should perhaps be done.  After chores, Tom would love to go for a Dairy Queen ice cream cone with his kids, and later in life began to treat the grandchildren to the tradition.  Although Tom was stern at times, he was a big teddy bear at heart, and his grandchildren thought the world of their grandpa.

Tom enjoyed country music and attending concerts, expressed a great dry sense of humor, loved his Green Bay Packers, and enjoyed a whiskey sweet old fashion when the time was right.  Those close to Tom will not forget his sweet tooth, and he will be remembered sitting in his recliner with some chocolate or peanuts and a Winston in hand.

Tom will be missed by his wife, Cheryl, his children:  Joseph ( Michelle) Koehler of Chilton, Nicholas (Angie) Koehler of Chilton, Richard (Tabatha) Koehler of Chilton, Pamela (Eric) Zastrow of Appleton, and Jennifer Koehler of Appleton; 8 grandchildren:  Kari Koehler, Heather Koehler, Kathryn Koehler, Emily Koehler, Olivia Bonlander, Hannah Bonlander, Samantha Koehler, and Nicholas Koehler; brothers:  Michael Koehler of New Holstein and Randolph (Connie) Koehler of Chilton; sisters:  Judy (Fred) Kucera of Eau Claire, Donna (Tom) Biernasz of Pestigo, Linda (Bill) Sperbeck of Fond du Lac, Lori (Scott) Buechel of New Holstein; Mother-and Father-in-Law,  Eugene and Dorothy Mertz;  Brothers-and Sisters-in-law:  Dale (Brenda) Mertz, Jerry (Joann) Kolbe, Linda (John) Schwobe, Gary (Terri) Mertz, Kelly (Tim) Peer all of the Chilton area.  Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brother, David Koehler, and sisters-in-law, Patricia Koehler and Beth Mertz.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 Am on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Heritage Park Chapel in Charlestown with Rev. Patrick Niles officiating.  Burial will be in the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery.  Friends my call at Wieting Family Funeral Home from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, February 4, 2018 and on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Heritage Park from 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM until the time of service.

Tom’s family would like to especially thank Pastor Patrick Niles, all the nurses, doctors, and staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Affinity Visiting Nurses for all their care, kindness, and support.

Nick, Angie, and family,
Sending my deepest sympathy for your loss. Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Judy Woelfel (New Holstein) - Jan. 31, 2018

My heart hurts for you and your beautiful family, Cheryl. God will give you the strength you need to get through the coming days, weeks and forward as you will miss the love of your life, but have the support of family and friends who love you. I am so happy to have met Tom, only once, briefly, but when he still had sparkle in his eyes. The obituary and pictures are an amazing tribute to a good man. We will be out of town, leaving Sunday for Vegas, but among all that glitz and noise, I will be with you in thought and prayer, Cheryl. Love and sympathy, Mary

Mary Cooke (Friend of Cheryl) - Jan. 31, 2018
