Andrew John Mattes, age 33, of Malone and formerly Racine, passed away on March 27, 2026, after courageously fought battle with cancer.
Born on December 28, 1992, Andrew was the beloved son of John and Angelene (Mirocha) Mattes. He was a 2011 graduate of William Horlick High School and went on to build a career as a Warehouse Materials Handler, working for Kerry Spice and most recently Bombardier Recreational Products.
Andrew was known for his incredible sense of humor and his ability to crack a joke in any situation. He possessed a beautiful, memorable smile that remained a constant, even during his toughest trials. A true lover of the outdoors, Andrew was most at home when he was fishing with his family or deer hunting with his father, brother, and brothers-in-law. His summers were defined by swimming with his siblings and children and kayaking the waters of Lake Winnebago.
Andrew was a man of simple pleasures; for him, a perfect fall night consisted of a warm bonfire and some good music. He enjoyed shooting pool with his dad and friends at the local pub, and the camaraderie of the Racine Moose Lodge #437, where he was an avid dart ball and corn hole player. Of all the days in the year, the 4th of July was his favorite; to him it symbolized freedom. He cherished the Racine 4th of July and Artesia Beach parades and the joy of celebrating with family.
In his final journey, Andrew found great strength and community through the “Live Strong” program at the Fond du Lac YMCA, where he bonded with fellow survivors who provided unwavering support.
Andrew’s legacy of laughter and resilience lives on in his family. He will deeply be missed by his son, Aiden Heather; his stepdaughter, Lily Brandies; his parents: John and Angie; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Kay Mirocha; and his paternal grandparents, William and Carol Mattes. He is further survived by his siblings, Katelyn (Kyle) Bellaire, Nicholas Mattes, and Chloe (Justen) Mogren; his Goddaughter, Lainey; his nephew and niece, Kaiden and Blakely; his faithful dog, Lacy; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
The family wishes to express their deepest heart-felt thanks and gratitude to Calumet Hospice for the extraordinary support provided during a difficult time. We are especially grateful to Nurse Kim and Health Aid Mary, whose compassion, comfort, and gentle care brought such peace to Andrew and our entire family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 17th, 2026, at St. Mary By the Lake Catholic Church, located at 7605 Lakeshore Dr., Racine, WI 53402. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m.
A celebration of life honoring Andrew for our Holyland friends will be held at a later date, to be announced.

To my handsome son with the most beautiful blue eyes & genuine smile, I cannot put into words how much dad & I miss you. I will always cherish the wonderful memories that I have of you. Watching you when you were little as you & dad built projects on Saturday mornings. You loved that time with your dad, building bird houses & one time even a step stool! I miss your laugh, your quick thinking humor & your big beautiful smile. I am thankful you're no longer in pain but oh how I miss you. I'll love you forever.

Our heart is with your family during this heartbreaking time. Andrew was such a wonderful young man, full of spirit and love and his smile lit up a room. He showed extraordinary courage and endurance throughout his journey, and he truly ran a remarkable race. Though his battle was long and difficult, he met it with strength that inspired everyone who followed his story. We pray you find comfort in knowing that he is now resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus, free from pain, and held in perfect love. May you feel God‘s nearness as you grieve, and made the legacy of his bravery and spirit continue to shine through all who loved him. We are all holding you close in our thoughts and prayers today.
