Bette J Werbeckes
Chilton WI
Bette Jane (Brooks) Werbeckes, 88, of Chilton, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2022. She was born on June 5, 1934, daughter of Edward and Emelie (Strassburg) Brooks.
Bette graduated from Sheboygan Central High School in 1952. In 1956 she married her high school sweetheart, William R. (Bill) Werbeckes. Together they raised five children.
Bette’s first job was for The Vollrath Company. After her youngest child started school, Bette began working at the Calumet County Clerk of Courts until her retirement in 1995. She and Bill made many friends through their community involvement at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Schuhplattler dancing group, casino bus trips, and Knights of Columbus events.
If you ever received a dollar bill in the mail from an anonymous sender, it was from Bette. It was her unique way to congratulate anyone whose photo appeared in the newspaper. Her family was her first priority. In retirement, she and Bill drove many miles to visit their children and grandchildren to celebrate with them on their birthdays every year. She enjoyed family gatherings filled with good food, beer on ice, and scratch-off lottery tickets for everyone. Bette was Irish one day each year. She celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with green hair, clothing, fingernails, food and beer. She will be dearly missed at every family gathering.
Survivors include her children: Carrie (Doug) Staege of Beechwood, grandchildren: Logan (Erin) Staege and Liz (Alex) Awve and great-grandchildren: Audrey and Dominic Staege and Emma and Owen Awve; Mark (Lori) Werbeckes of Mount Horeb, grandchildren: Nathan (Shannon) Werbeckes, Nic (Katie) Robles, Sara Werbeckes (Miles Morkri); Jean (Donald) Aden of Sun Prairie, grandchildren: Noah Aden and Hayley Aden; Dan (Jeanna) Werbeckes of Sherwood, grandchildren: Jacob Werbeckes (Nina Slezak) and Caleb Werbeckes. Brother-in-law: Robert Werbeckes of Sun City, AZ; sister-in-law: Susie Brooks of Lakewood, WA; and nieces and nephews in Wisconsin, Nevada and Washington.
Bette was preceded in death by her husband Bill, daughter Jill Werbeckes; her parents, in-laws William P. and Ann A. Werbeckes; brother Roger Brooks and sister-in-law Kaye Werbeckes.
Bette’s family will gather at the funeral home for a private service, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Chilton, on Friday, July 15th at 11:00am. Burial will be a private service at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Sheboygan. Those wishing to watch an archived recording of the Mass of Christian Burial, view a memorial video, or view flowers and gifts given to the family may do so by clicking HERE.

Condolences
Dear Werbeckes Family, Our deepest sympathy in the passing of your beloved Mom, & Grandmother. Unfortunately, we only learned now of "Mom's" passing, otherwise I would have attended her funeral. She opened her heart to me in a very special way. I will always have very special memories of her. I still have my "Official Adoption Certificate" with the Calumet County Seal on it. We can trust that she is at peace now with "Dad" & Jill ("Sis") once again. May Christ's Peace, Joy, Hope & Mercy comfort you all. Mark ("Bro") & Judy

Bette's family, so sorry for your loss. I was one receiver on many one dollar bills in the mail, in fact I still have one in my drawer at home, which always makes me smile. They were always a fun couple to visit with and would always share their wisdom. Enjoy your own memories. God bless.

We had moved to Minnesota when Bill and Bette came to visit us along with his brother, Bob and wife Kaye. We gave Bill and Bette a room with twin beds. So much fun was had by all during this visit and when it came time for their departure, Bette tells us that only one twin needed to have the sheets washed. We were obviously stunned and asked why and also how they were able to sleep in a small twin bed? Bette said, " We have never slept alone and are not about to begin now!" Wow, had we known that we would have put Bob and Kaye in the twin room!

Bette was a kind and a very friendly lady. She showed her thoughtfulness by sending our children dollars. We miss her and Bill.

Bette and Bill were always a favorite to visit on our trips to Wisconsin. We will always remember Betteās quick wit and welcoming hug. Favorite memories were our confetti wars. One year, we sent Bette and Bill a holiday card with confetti in it. She never forgot and opening an envelope from her required a garbage can strategically placed under the opening envelope. Also, when we referenced them, we always mixed it up by saying Uncle Bette and Auntie Bill. After the first time it was said, it never changed. You both will be forever missed.

Before Covid, Betty and Bill were guests at the Chilton Meal-on Wheels site. We enjoyed their humor, quick jokes, and Bill's 'lets get the facts straight' comments. They were a couple always so kind and thankful for the simple meals offered. I will always remember Bette's pink sweater she so dearly loved to wear and looked so good in it too! It was a pleasure to know them both.

My Dad worked with Bette at the courthouse, and when I was a child, Bette was incredibly generous to me and my siblings. We regularly received Christmas and birthday gifts from her. She extended this generosity to the children of her other co-workers as well. She was always kind and always smiling. Thoughts and prayers to her friends and family. She will be missed by many.

Bette took me under her wing when I started working with her and we remained friends after she retired. Tom and I always looked forward to our hugs from Bette and Bill in church.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bette. She was a grand lady and a great friend. Although I knew her long before I worked in the courthouse, she taught me "the ropes" of all things courthouse. I truly enjoyed her humor and joy of life. Her love for Bill and family was amazing. God's blessings to all her family in these difficult days. Rest in the knowledge she is at peace.

OMGoodness, I received a few of Bette's dollars over the years. What a thoughtful person. Always a heart of gold and a smile too. RIP Bette, glad you're with Bill again. My husband bowled with Bill for many years and my grandma was a dispatch for Calumet County, which is where I first met the Werbeckes'. My condolences to the family.
