Carroll E Rudy

Chilton WI

Carroll E. Rudy, 86, of Chilton, died on June 30, 2024, at her residence. She was born in Corry, PA, and attended Edinboro State University, studying biology and English. While there, she met Martin Rudy, who shared her interest in science. Their marriage spanned 60 years of exploring field trips across the US, mostly tent-camping. She further earned a master’s degree in biology.

Carroll was fascinated by all aspects of the natural world. A self-taught professional artist, she produced paintings and beautifully graceful, technically-detailed drawings of native plants, animals, and insects. Her drawings illustrated an ornithology textbook as well as publications for nature and bird clubs. Wild birds were Carroll’s passion. She was a bird bander and breeding bird surveyor.

Carroll was a generous volunteer in nature conservation organizations and nature centers Woodland Dunes (Two Rivers) and Ledge View (Chilton). The breadth of her research and hands-on personal experience made her a valuable resource. She also wrote for nature center newsletters. Locally, Carroll and Martin were among the founding members of Calumet Nature Studies, the volunteer friends group involved in the development of Ledge View Nature Center.

Carroll was still conducting the annual frog survey, as a citizen scientist for the WI DNR with Martin, and enjoying her flowers, wild birds, and (yes:) cats when interrupted by a stroke. She is survived by her husband, Martin, and naturalist friends. A private burial and memorial are planned.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Nature Conservancy or The American Chestnut Foundation would be appreciated.

Condolences to the Rudy family. Carroll and Mom were kindred spirits with an appreciation for all of nature. We hope you find solace in the good works she did, and know the world is a better place for her being a part of it. The Barb and Bill Hertel family
