We got to know Chuck when we traveled to China on a 6 week AFS study program together in the summer of 1987. In that unique setting we got to know him as a warm, caring, funny, inquisitive and cross-culturally astute individual. I (Jim) will always remember when a fellow traveler injured his leg, Chuck and I carried him on our once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Great Wall. Chuck and I grew up just doors apart on Milwaukee Street, across from Columbia Park in Port Washington. We walked to kindergarten together, then to St. Mary's. We graduated together from Port High. During those early years we roamed between Milwaukee and Montgomery Streets, our imagination taking us far and wide. John Thome was often a part of the exploration, and I remember both Chuck and I being revolted when we saw him devour creepy crawly things. Life ends but memories last forever.

Mr. Schuknecht was an outstanding teacher. His international travel and hosting of international visitors offered rare insight to his teaching, especially in such a small community as Chilton. In a time before internet, his sharing of his trip to China, when fewer westerners traveled to China was memorable. His perspectives influenced my own decisions later in life to travel and live abroad. He taught in engaging ways, such as teaching diminishing returns in his economics class by challenging students to drink an entire 2-liter bottle of soda in one class session, with the last gulps not as satisfying as the first for those who tried. Above all, he was a very kind man, who kept in touch with me long after graduation. May he rest in peace.

Chuck was a class act, a great guy. As a frosh back in 1966-67, he was our football coach, and senior year my social studies teacher. He made us better people. Mr. Schuknecht always shared wisdom and kindness with everyone. As a young child, I remember many a conversation between him and my dad, living kitty corner from each other in Chilton. Later on, I remember when he substituted for my classes - and he always found a charismatic way to quiet my disruptive wisecracking commentary. In young adulthood, I remember other conversations and wisdom as we were once again neighbors, in a country kind of way.
