Cyril A Schmitz
Chilton, WI

Cyril A. Schmitz, age 87, of Chilton, died on November 27, 2021, peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on June 20, 1934, son of the late Henry and Anna Schmitz. After high school, he was drafted to the Army and was stationed in Berlin, Germany.  He served as a Catholic Chaplain during 1958-1959. When he returned home, he worked on the family farm. He later married Janet Hephner and they had five children.
Cyril was very social and always liked a good party. He could talk to strangers as though they were old friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and playing baseball for the men’s teams in Charlesburg and Marytown; he even coached at Charlesburg for over 30 years. He met Janet at a dance and they dated for four years before he proposed on Christmas by putting a ring under the tree. Christmas was always his favorite time of year; he loved putting up decorations while listening to music. He was always fixing things and tinkering on things…he left a few unfinished projects in the kitchen…laundry room…basement…garage…and a few outside. He loved listening to music and had a fine voice. He also had a great sense of humor and knew how to tell a joke.

Cyril was proud of serving his country and joined the local VFW and American Legion in Chilton and New Holstein. He was a hard worker and taught his kids to do things the right way. He took pride in working on the farm his entire life, right up until a week before his death.

Cyril is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janet; children: Julie (Steve) Salt, Timothy Schmitz, Tony (LuAnn) Schmitz, Anne Schmitz, and Mike Schmitz (Jayne Ecker); six grandchildren: Lincoln Salt, Evie Salt, Cody Schmitz, Jorden Schmitz, Dustin Schmitz, and Henry Schmitz; step-grandchildren, Megan and Max Ecker; sisters-in-law: Angie Schmitz, Virginia Schmitz, Dolores Schmitz, Pearl (Henry) Vander Wielen, and Theresa (Ron) Wrobleski; and brothers-in-law: Fr. John Hephner, Harvey Hephner, Russell Hephner, and Earl (Joanie) Hephner.

Cyril was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Anna; Janet’s parents: Jay and Zoea Hephner; grandchild, Hunter Schmitz; brothers: Jerome Schmitz, Stanley Schmitz, and Eugene Schmitz; and a sister-in-law: Delores Hephner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 10:00 am until 11:45 am at the church on the day of service. His burial will be at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Charlesburg following the funeral service.  “As the world turns…auf wiedersehen...machs gut” ~ Cyril Schmitz

One of my last memories with Cyril. I was on a walk, and I noticed Cyril sitting in a raised bucket of a tractor. To believe my eyes I walked down their long driveway and saw that my eyes were right! He climbed down the ladder that was leaning against the tractor, and we had a nice visit. This was one or two years ago, right before his 85th or 86th birthday.

Go rest high on that mountain. Cyril, your work on earth is done.

R.I.P. Cyril, we will miss your smiling face and quick wit. The newspaper will be on the table as always, waiting for you.

To the Schmitz family, please accept our sincere condolences. Cyril is a great man and has left a wonderful mark on this earth. God Bless!

So sorry to hear about your loss. Cyril was the best baseball coach ever. He is the only person that remembers my one good game I had in many seasons playing for the Charlesburg Stars and brought it up 30 years later like it had just happened. :-) We will miss that energy, smiles, and laughter. I am sure he is up in heaven with his brothers throwing them his patented "thumb ball" and striking them all out. God Bless you all as we pray for your peace!
