Daniel R Matthies
Chilton, WI

Daniel R. Matthies, 80, of Chilton, died on October 17, 2018, at Thedacare Regional Medical Center in Appleton. He was born June 9, 1938, in Potter, WI, son of the late Leroy and LaVerne Matthies. On June 13, 1959, he married Judith Schneider at St. Augustus Catholic Church in Chilton, and together they had four children.

Daniel worked as a die setter at Mirro Foley for 41 years before retiring when the plant closed. He had a passion for his community and he was generous with his free time: he was a volunteer fireman for 15 years, Cub Scout leader, a crossing guard, and the groundskeeper for Hillside Cemetery. He was also very active in the Matt Kolbe benefit event every summer. He walked three miles a day but it took him two hours because he stopped to talk with everyone he passed. He was a jokester and always had a clean joke for his audience.

Judy remembers a loving husband that made sure to tell her he loved her and that she was cute everyday. Judy and Danny met at the Uptown Cafe where Judy saw him sitting near a window. She was there with her friends because they served the best french fries in the world, and when she saw Danny it was love at first sight. She told her friends she was going to marry that boy. After dating for a while they went to the Christmas service at Danny’s church in Potter and then headed to Chilton to go to mass at Judy’s church. Along the way they stopped at the gas station on Madison Street and that is where Danny proposed. Later in life they would share a passion for camping and exploring the backroads of Wisconsin and Michigan.

Daniel was caring and compassionate and none knew it better than his grandchildren. He was known as “Grandpa M&M” because he always had the candy to share with them, and he never missed any of their sporting events. At home, his TV was usually playing the Packers, Brewers, or Badgers, and he was always up for a game of Sheepshead with David and Eva Matthies. Daniel had a special bond with his grandson, Matthew, who lovingly called his grandfather “Puppa.” Daniel would take Matt fishing but would keep the hook off his line so Matt could catch more fish than him, then they would go have ice cream. Daniel challenged his grandkids to do well in school by reminding them that he was the smartest kid in his class - because he was the only kid in his grade at the Potter school. Kidding aside, Daniel was an avid reader and had a strong knowledge of history, current politics, and the news.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Judith; his daughters: Debra (Peter) Geiser, Kathleen (Mark) Burg, Sandra (Ronald) Kolbe, and Patricia (Michael) Pickerill; grandchildren: Jeremy (Lynn) Geiser, Daniel (Katie) Geiser, Melanie (Chad) Kautzer, Cassandra (Bradley) Buechel, Michael (Lyndsey) Burg, Andrew (Sarah) Burg, Brian (Amber) Burg, Luke (Emily) Kolbe, Ashley Pickerill (Special Friend, Ryan Dvorachek), David Pickerill (Special Friend, Virginia Bailey), McKenzie Pickerill, and Michael Pickerill; his mother-in-law: Verna Schneider; thirteen great-grandchildren and one more on the way; brothers: David (Eva) Matthies, and Mark (Carol) Matthies; sister-in-law: Susan (Steve) Neuber; and brother-in-law: James (Alice) Schneider.

Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and LaVerne; his father-in-law: William Schneider; two grandchildren: Matthew Kolbe and Stephanie Kolbe; and one great-grandchild: Willow Burg.

Funeral services are set for 7:00pm on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 4:00pm until 6:45pm at the funeral home on the day of the service. Burial will take place at 11:00am on Monday, October 22, 2018, at the Potter Cemetery in Potter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Davita Dialysis of Appleton and the Appleton Medical Center for their excellent care.
