David T. “Dave” Salm, age 62, of Chilton, died on Friday, April 10, 2020, at his home in Chilton. He was born January 19, 1958, in Chilton, son of Martin Salm and the late Marjorie (Zorn) Salm. Dave married Alexandria Lynn “Alex” Catalano on July 28, 1984 in Milwaukee.

Dave was an entrepreneur at heart, never afraid to take risks and explore what life had to offer. He tried his hand at running an apple orchard, catering paella from a six-foot-wide pan, selling potato pancakes and boiled peanuts at farmers' markets, and designing a proprietary worchestershire sauce. He especially loved to bring people joy through his food. He discovered his passion for the service industry while working at Marcal's Restaurant in Chilton and was the director of food service at St. Lawrence Seminary. As his knowledge grew, he applied it to many genres of cooking. He was the Head Pit Master for the Legends of Smoke – Team Red Arrow, and he was the owner and head chef at al corso Restaurant in Collins. He was a member of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association where he served on their board of directors for many years

Dave was a spiritual man, a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Newton.

Dave loved to be in the outdoors. He had a tremendous love for fishing and hunting and took great pride in teaching youth about nature in the Hunter Safety Program. It wasn’t uncommon to see him biking, tending to his garden, or, as a “wanna-be” logger, clearing trees where they need not be for future growth of better trees.

He was a man who believed in hard work, being compassionate toward others who needed it, and remaining honest to all he was. Above all of the joys and blessings bestowed upon Dave in this life, he always put his family first and made sure their needs were of paramount importance in all of his responsibilities. In the short time he had with his granddaughters, he enjoyed watching them grow, and his peek-a-boo sessions will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife: Alex; his father: Martin; his children: Mitchell (Sara Corsini) Salm, Emily (Marco Ferreri) Salm, Shane Salm & his fiancee Megan Kilsdonk, Madalyn (DJ) Steinberg; 2 grandchildren: Francesca Ferreri & Mila Salm; his siblings: Jane Schwalbach, Pat (LeRoy) Meyers, Nancy (Ken) Mueller, Kathy Joas, Ann (Mark) Rusch, Mark (Jean) Salm, Barb Salm and her life partner, Cathy, Mary Salm, Phillip (Delia) Salm; and his in-laws: Ann Buchach, Joan Backus, Gary (Nancy) Catalano, Gilbert Catalano, Barbara (Steve) Lawent, John Catalano, Victoria (Roland Gonzalez) Catalano, & Christine Catalano. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his mother: Marjorie; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Vincent & Aino Catalano; a brother: Paul Salm; and his siblings-in-law: Richard Buchach, Warren Backus & Rebecca Catalano.

He was Alex’s best and most loyal friend and his children’s hero from beginning to end. As Dave lived his life, remember to love yourself and those around you, find God in all, and to live each day as if it were your last.

Funeral services are pending.

Dave was a good man. He had a great sense of humor. I had the pleasure of being his neighbor and babysitter when the kids were young. He was always a hard worker. He would sometimes bring home cheeseburgers from MarCals. The best cheeseburgers in the world to this very day. He and Alex were always good to me. They both were good listeners, always had a bright happy outlook on life and always seemed to find a way to make something work.

He was always "excited" to read my poetry when I was younger..(sarcasm..he called it black poetry)

I am so very sorry, foremost for you Alex. And of course Mitchell, Emily, Shane and Madeline.

Life is never the same, but time takes away some of the pain. Dave will never be forgotten. Just thinking of him brings a smile to my face.

He remains with you, in each of you. You will never be alone.

To the entire Salm Family,
Our deepest sympathy to all our you for the loss of such a great man. My was my helper in landing my job at SLS. He worked the second shift as head chef and soon become the Director of Food Service. He did an excellent job putting forth over and above was was needed. He treated everyone with respect and thought us the same. His obit is a wonderful send off and so many people will miss him dearly. Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Heaven has gained another great angel and a master chef. I found the picture of your 50th birthday from work of you in your office. We had a lot of fun! R.I.P. Dave

Alex and family, please accept our sincere condolences.

My Mother, Ceil Hertel, worked at Marcal's for years along side with Dave and the Salm family. Mom always talked highly of Dave and how wonderfully he treated his staff. As I youth, I was hired by Dave to paint the exterior of the new Marcal's, Dave was always peeking out the back door to make sure I had all the supplies I needed, and an occasional cool beverage to help with the hot summer sun. God bless.

Alex, Ann, and family,
I am so sorry to learn of your loss. Wishing you great peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Judy Woelfel (New Holstein) - Apr. 13, 2020

I went to college with Shane. I had the distinct honor and pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs Salm during a winter visit to Chilton with Shane. Mr Salm (Dave) never hesitated to make me feel welcome and at home with his family and feed me some of the best food I had ever had.

I will never forget that trip. I grew up in Southern Wisconsin and Dave always called me the "city kid" because I did not grow up in the woods or had hunted before. He encouraged me to let go of my urban life once in awhile and bask in the glory of a small town, quiet, beautiful, wooded scenery. Him and Shane took me on my first ice fishing trip ever, where I proceeded to slip on the ice many times (I have bad balance). Many laughs were at my expense, but Dave had always ensured I was having fun and feeling a part of his family. I got to visit al corso and the bar the Salms owned at the time too. It was a genuine experience, even for this Wisconsinite.

I'll never forget Dave and my time with his family. From the minute I met him, I could tell he loved his family and cared for anybody who needed help; he always seemed to do what was right. He had an exciting sense of humor too.

My sincere condolences to Dave, Shane, and the entire family. While I no longer live in Wisconsin, I will always cherish Dave's spirit and love for family, friends, and following your passions.

Sending love from Philly, from the "city kid" from Janesville, WI. <3
