Donald G Riemer
Appleton, WI

Donald G. Riemer, age 75, of Appleton (formerly of Chilton), died on June 13, 2022, at UW Hospital in Madison. He was born July 29, 1946, son of the late Melvin and Dora (Suemnicht) Riemer. He graduated from Chilton High School in 1964. On November 6, 1971, he married Doris Schmitting, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage last year.

Don developed a love for hogs in 1958, when he bought his first Hampshire sow at age 11.  In April of 1970, Don bought a dairy farm and constructed it into a large hog farm operation which Don and Doris operated for over 40 years.  He was proud of his nationally recognized herd achieving many awards including the top pen of boars in the US and his All-American Champion Hampshire Gilt named "Isla'.  Genetics from their herd were utilized across the US and in several foreign countries.  His passion for showing hogs carried on through his children and grandchildren. Don judged many youth market animal shows throughout Wisconsin.  He was instrumental in starting the Market Animal Sale at the Calumet County Fair and he dedicated many years to the youth program.  In 1978, Don and Doris were the first hog-raising family to win the Wisconsin Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmers.  Don served many years on the board of the Wisconsin Pork Producers.  In 1992, Don and Doris were awarded the Wisconsin Master Agriculturist award.

Don served many years as a director on the Calumet County Fair Board and later became president of the Calumet County Fair. He held various positions at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hilbert, including being on the church council, a church elder, and a member of the choir. When he and Doris moved to Appleton, he became a member at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Don also worked at Briess Industries for over 10 years until an ongoing heart condition forced him to stop. On March 20, 2015, he got a second chance at life when he received a LVAD (left ventricular assist device) and was given seven additional years to enjoy life. He enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening, and he was very meticulous in tending to his flower and rose gardens. Don's grandchildren were very important to him. He loved teaching them new things and attending their activities.

Don is survived by his wife, Doris; his children: Tracy (Nick) Zutz, Dr. Kevin (Stacey Brown) Riemer, and Adam Riemer; and grandchildren: Kyla Zutz, Rylee Zutz, Zander Zutz, Harrison Brown, and Hamilton Brown; sisters: Geraldine Lemke and Dianna Popp; brother-in-law: Gene (Carol) Schmitting; sister-in-law: Jackie (Larry) Wunrow; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by two sons: Scott Riemer and Brian Riemer; his parents: Melvin and Dora; mother- and father-in-law: William and Leona Schmitting; brothers: Ron (Sharon) Riemer and Dennis Riemer; brothers-in-law: Donald Lemke, Jerry Popp, and Earl (Katie) Schmitting; and his first wife: Kay Riemer.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (2220 E. College Ave.) in Appleton, with Rev. Timothy Seabaugh officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday, June 17, 2022, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton, and again from 9:30 am until 10:45 am on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Appleton. The family would like to thank the countless nurses, doctors, and the wonderful LVAD team on the cardiac wing at UW Hospital for their excellent care. They also thank Restoring Hope Transplant House for their years of support and friendship.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in the name of Donald Riemer.

My deepest condolences to you Tracy for the loss of your Father Donald.
