Doris Ann Murter
Hilbert WI
Doris Ann Murter –– she preferred to be called by both of her given names –– age 77, died at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, WI, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Doris Ann was born on August 11, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Alfred Z. Murter and his wife, Nora J. Conway. Doris Ann grew up in Philadelphia, where she graduated in 1965 from St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls.
Doris Ann had a sweet tooth, especially for chocolate. This may have been genetic, given that her grandfather Eugene L. Murter, Sr., worked as a candymaker in New York City in the 1890s.
After the deaths of both of her parents, and perceiving a call to religious life, in 1977 Doris Ann went to Milwaukee, WI, where she joined a Franciscan order. Ultimately, this vocation did not endure. Doris Ann chose to stay in Wisconsin, living at different times in Manitowoc, Hilbert, Chilton, and New Holstein. She hated winter in Wisconsin, but her love for cheese balanced that out.
Doris Ann was preceded in death by both of her parents; her brother, Alfred R. Murter, and his wife Gertrude (Erb) Murter; and by her beloved cousin, Joseph F. Murter.
She is survived by her three nephews: Michael, Stephen, and Jeff Murter; her cousin Joe's son, Jay, whose photos from his travels delighted Doris Ann; friends: Allan & Mary Mader, who cared for Doris Ann in countless ways over the years; her friends: Sandy and Dorothy; her friend: Elaine Watson with whom she shared stories of their time together in the convent; and a large group of folks who enjoyed Doris Ann's quirky charm and sense of humor, including Nikki, Pat, Lisa, Tammy, Nicole, Destiny, and all her caregivers at Willowdale Health Services in New Holstein, WI, who will miss her very much.
A memorial for Doris Ann will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at Willowdale Health Services (1610 Hoover St.) in New Holstein.
Memorials can be sent to the Wieting Family Funeral Home c/o Doris Murter 411 W. Main Street. Chilton, WI 53014

Doris Ann, Your passing has left a gigantic hole in my heart. I really loved you, my "little Leoprechaun." I miss or conversations in the hallway at Willowdale. But, I know you are with your family and God, and that gives me solace. May flights of angels guide you to heaven, my friend.
