Gene E Altekruse
Stockbridge, WI

Gene Altekruse, 76, of Stockbridge, died at his home on July 1, 2018. He was born July 22, 1941, in Fort Wayne, IN, son of Kenneth and Verda (Pfeiffer) Altekruse.

Gene attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and met Barbara Beyerlein while sharing a “ride board” trip home to Fort Wayne. In those days, Gene was shy around girls and it was Barbara who asked him for their first date, a Sadie Hawkins dance. Gene graduated from the Purdue College of Engineering and married Barbara the very next day, on August 10, 1963 in Fort Wayne.

Gene had a lifelong fascination with kites and sailboats. Barbara believes he always wished he could fly. He enjoyed golf and was good enough to consider joining the pro tour shortly after graduation. His family remembers his friendly, outgoing nature. Nobody was ever a stranger to Gene because of his humor and charm.

Gene is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children: KC (Karen) Altekruse and Kristina (T. Matthew) Scott; grandchildren: Ben Altekruse, Jason Altekruse (fiancee, Alyssa McDuffe), Michael Scott, and Ellen Scott; sister: Gail (Bill Norris) Altekruse; brothers: Jack (Joanne) Altekruse and Rick (Barbara) Altekruse; sisters-in-law: Susan Beyerlein and Becky (Tom) VanDenDreissche; and brother-in-law: John Beyerlein.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Verda, and Barbara’s parents, Carl and Gertrude Beyerlein.

A memorial service is set for 3:00pm on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at First English Lutheran Church (326 E. North St.) in Appleton. Friends are welcome at the church on the day of service from 2:00pm until 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association or the Ronald McDonald House.
