Herbert F. “Herbie” Groeschel, age 92, of Stockbridge, died surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 29, 2018 at Atrium Post Acute Care in Chilton.  He was born September 3, 1925 in the Town of Stockbridge, son of the late Charles & Ann (Mueller) Groeschel.

Herbie proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII with a 155 mm Howitzer Unit in Okinawa, Japan.  Following his honorable discharge, Herbie married June Ingalls on February 26, 1949 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Stockbridge American Legion, and the Harbor Fishing Club in Stockbridge.  He cherished every moment he could on the waters of Lake Winnebago fishing.  He had such a strong passion for the outdoor sport, it didn’t matter to him whether the water was wet or frozen, he just wanted to be casting lines or spearing sturgeon.  He also enjoyed time spent in his garden, being especially meticulous with his prized potatoes.

Over the years, he worked at Chilton Carnation Company, worked on the Railroad, Rassmusson Construction and farmed until his retirement.  He was also extremely proud that he was a bee keeper for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years: June Groeschel; his children: Rose Mary Heller, Darlene (Harold) Brandt, Linda (Henry) Lodel, Shirley (Tim) Kopiske, Jim (Kathy) Groeschel; sisters: Viola Emery & Irene Van Oss; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.  He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Herbie was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Mary Ann Olson, a grandson and a great granddaughter; his sisters: Clara Thiel, Olive Vader Zanden, Evelyn Thiel and infant Mary Ann.

Funeral service will be at 4:00 pm on Friday, May 4, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with Rev. Michael Betley officiating.  Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church from 1:30 pm until 3:45 pm on Friday, May 4, 2018.

Herbert’s family would like to thank the first responders from Stockbridge and the doctors and nurses at Theda Care Hospital in Appleton as well as the entire staff of Atrium and the Heartland Hospice nurses for all of the love and care that was shown to Herbie.
Dear June, Rosie and family,
His love of family was evident in all his hard work and play. May he rest in peace. My sympathy to all. He was a good man.

One memory I would like to share is when I was real young grandpa would sit me on his lap and peel an Apple in one long string. Then he would cut a piece off for me, and then one for him. Every time I look at an Apple I always think of my loving and caring grandfather who always took time for his grandkids. My thoughts and prayers are with my family. I love you all, and I will see you again one day grandpa.

Rhonda Verity (Granddaughter ) - Apr. 30, 2018

I always remembered Great Grandpa working hard on the farm. I wasn't alive while they still had cows and while the barn was still standing, but even after his retirement, he still had his hobby garden. It was his pride and joy, and was always happiest when fishing or farming with his 'partner in crime' Momma Blackie, the Cat.
