Hugh T Wagner

Appleton WI

Hugh Theodore Wagner shared a birthday with Elvis - January 8. Upon learning this many decades ago, Elvis gained another #1 fan in Hugh. Elvis pictures festooned the walls of Hugh’s many living spaces, appeared on his shirts, socks, slippers, sweatshirts, drinking mugs and blankets.

Hugh died peacefully on June 16 at Heartwood Senior Living in Appleton. He was 62 years old.

Hugh’s zest for life was clear to all who knew him. A trip to Graceland? He was up for it - twice! The annual week-long trip to Camp Daniel? Sign him up! Travel adventures with AbleTrek Tours? You betcha! Karaoke? You’d have to fight him for the mic. An afternoon at the casino and Red Lobster afterward with sister LuAnn? Oh, did he love that!

He thrived at the New Hope Center workshop in Chilton, loved the County Fair,  Jerry Schneider’s band and polka dancing. Walking or biking all around Chilton, Hugh seemed to know everybody and they sure knew him. Ellie Hilton, Lori Olson and so many others were a loving presence to Hugh at New Hope Center and Brooklyn House in Chilton.

Hugh was preceded in death by his sister Niki, his brother Karl, his brothers-in-law Louis Sidney and Richard Sharp and his parents, Hank and Rosemary Wagner. Hugh is survived by brother Michael Wagner (Darla), sisters Patricia Sidney, Barbara Wagner, Joyce Evraets (Joe), Kristine Wagner-Sharp, LuAnn Wagner, Jaclyn Pellegrini (Jeff), Jill Wagner Kelly (Brad), Marti Maas (Kevin) and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family meant everything to Hugh. Special thanks to those who kept Hugh in their lives these past years. He valued your visits, phone calls and companionship more than you’ll ever know.

Thanks also to the staff of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Community Care, Heartwood Senior Living and AseraCare Hospice for taking such good and gentle care of Hugh. Gratitude also for service as Hugh’s legal guardians to Michael, Barbara and especially to Jill, who accepted and cheerfully performed this duty for 24 years.

A celebration of Hugh’s life is planned for Monday, July 1, at Wieting Funeral Home in Chilton, Wisconsin. Visitation is at 1:30 PM with service to follow at 2:30 PM. At the time of the service and following, there will be a link available for those wishing to watch a live stream or archived recording of the service, watch a memorial video, or see pictures of the flowers and gifts given to the family on their website page provided through wietingfuneralhome.com

Donations in Hugh’s honor may be sent to the New Hope Center in Chilton and/or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Condolences

I knew Hugh from NHC where my son had worked. I used to drive him to Camp Daniel with a van full of campers. He was always a perfect gentleman. At dances for New Hope, he never sat down. What a joy it was to see how he enjoyed life! Hugh made me smile whenever I saw him. He was truly a gift to all who were lucky enough to know him. ????

Dear Barbara,as german friends we didn´t come to know Hugh in person, but we got a glimpse of his personality trough your warm telling. You gave us an impression about his humor, his fears and his likes and dislikes. And so we can imagine, that his death leaves a gap and everyone who knew him will be sadly mourned. Gods blessing to Hugh and all of you, Birgit and Michael, Sankt Augustin/Germany

Special thanks to sister Kristine who never failed to send Hugh a weekly card and sister Joyce, who regularly brought him goodies to satisfy his sweet tooth. Both also cheerfully took his daily phone calls where Hugh would say: Just checking to see how you’re doing. Thanks also to Jane Eckert who sent Hugh postcards from whatever location she was visiting. ??????

Loved Hugh! We would go down the road to the bend in the river where it was the closest to the river. We set up our poles and he loved catching fish. But he never wanted to keep them because he didn’t want them to die. He lived his life with that thinking in every aspect of his life. Loved him and his brunches he had. He loved having all his family around him and even myself having not being his brother in law anymore.

Randy Stache (Former brother in law ) 2024-06-18 19:28:47

On behalf of the Calumet County Fair we express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Hughie's family. Hughie as we knew him, was a long time number one fan of the fair. He didn't miss a day and he seemed to always enjoy himself at every event. He will be missed - many of us on the Fair Board knew and talked with Hughie often!
