Irene R Van Oss
Stockbridge, WI

Irene Rose Van Oss, age 83, of the Town of Stockbridge died on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at her home.  She was born March 20, 1935 in Stockbridge, daughter of the late Charles & Ann (Mueller) Groeschel.  Irene married Howard Van Oss in May of 1954 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge, the Chilton Red Hat Society and was a proud member of the IAMAW Union.  Irene had the pleasure of working at Tecumseh Products in New Holstein where she made many lifelong friends.  She retired in 1998 at the age of 62.

Irene enjoyed time spent sturgeon spearing on Lake Winnebago with her family.  She was well known for her delicious German cooking and collecting knick-knacks through the auctions she attended, items like salt and pepper shakers and antique glassware.  Irene was also quite crafty. She was an exceptional floral arranger and an excellent seamstress, having created and altered clothes for her children.  She also never passed up an opportunity to travel, whether that was to spend time in Crandon with her friend Lavonne, going to the Hodag, or taking a trip to donate money to the Oneida Nation.

Irene was the sweetest woman that ever lived. She continually gave of herself to make the lives of people around her more comfortable.  She opened her home to two students from Romania while they studied here.  Irene quickly became known as their “American Mom” while they still remain her two “Romanian Sons”.

Above all else, Irene was extremely proud of her 11 children and how they grew up to be successful adults.  It took her 10 boys before she had a daughter, but all of them were her pride and joy.  Irene truly was a brilliant example to everyone around her by how she lived and how she loved.  She never gave up on anything or anyone and did so with dignity and grace.

She is survived by her children: Raymond (Betty) Van Oss, Timothy (Gerri) Van Oss, William (Cheri) Van Oss, David (Marcy) Van Oss, Eugene (Karen) Van Oss, Ken (Lynn) Van Oss, Daniel (Iola) Van Oss, Dennis (Mary) Van Oss, Mark Van Oss, Antoinette Van Oss and her special friend, Tim Sohrweide; her Romanian Sons: Petrut Bacalu, Cornel Ceapa; her grandchildren: Lisa, Samantha, Matthew, Christina, Elizabeth, Joseph, Emily, Elliot, Benjamin, Melanie and Brandon; 7 great grandchildren with another arriving soon; and her very dear friends: Lavonne and Bud Brooks and their children, Stacey and Laurie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Howard; a son: John; a grandchild: Lucas; 4 sisters and 1 brother.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church (Military Road) in Stockbridge with Rev. Michael Betley officiating.  Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday, February 15, 2019 and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 am until 10:45 am.  A vigil service will take place Friday evening at the funeral home at the close of the visitation.

Irene’s family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to the Calumet County Hospice team for all of the love and care that was given to Irene and her entire family.
My memory of my anti Irene was at my grandmas and grandpas house we were sitting at a table just talking and laughing. We will all miss you greatly
