James R Vanden Elzen
Hilbert, WI

James R. Vanden Elzen, age 66, of Hilbert, died unexpectedly on May 24, 2022, doing what he loved when his boat capsized on Lake Erie during an annual fishing trip with his closest friends. He was born May 18, 1956, in Green Bay Wisconsin, son of the late Orville Vanden Elzen and Theresa Vanden Elzen. On September 11, 1993, he married Lisa Krueger at Peace Evangelical and Reform Church in Potter.

James was an outdoorsman who enjoyed his trips up north and loved hunting, fishing , and sturgeon spearing. He was part of the Potoul Sportsman’s Club and was Luke’s biggest fan when he raced. He always put others first and was always there to help someone that needed it, which made him a perfect fit to volunteer for the Hilbert Fire Department for over 35 years. Many people will remember him saying, “That’ll be good then,” and using “On the beach,” instead of goodbye.

James is survived by his children: Becky (Curt) Plate, Jami (Jason) Keberlein, Brandon (Amanda) Vanden Elzen, and Luke Vanden Elzen; grandchildren: Bryce (Lindsey), Taylor (special friend, Alex), Taylor (special friend, Kyle), Lauren, Kylee, Keira, Max, and Harper; his mother: Theresa Vanden Elzen; siblings: Bill (Kay) Vanden Elzen, Lou Ann Vaness, Jerry (Peggy) Vanden Elzen, Ron Vanden Elzen, Mike (Aimee) Vanden Elzen, and Amy Miller (special friend, Joe); Lisa’s parents: Diane and Roger Krueger; in-laws: Tom Guns, Penny (Mike) Loose, and Amy (Dean) Schmitz; his best friends: Nikki Bangart, Kim Bangart, Ron “Worm” Gast, and Tim Eldred; and many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Lisa; his father, Orville; and sisters: Mary Guns and Jo Ann Vanden Elzen.

A funeral service will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 2:00 pm until 6:45 pm at the funeral home on the day of service. A private committal service will take place the following day.  After committal there will be a further celebration of Jim's life at the Hilbert Community Center at 12:30 PM.  Those wishing to watch a memorial video or gifts given to the family may do so by clicking HERE.

The family extends a very special thanks to the staff at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Good Samaritans, and Shrock’s Marina for their tremendous efforts, hospitality, and caregiving of Jim and his family.
