Joan M. Thielman, age 83, of Chilton, died on August 12, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. She was born February 9, 1943, daughter of the late Vincent and Evelyn Hanke. On June 10, 1967, she married Joseph Thielman and together they had three sons.
Joan will always be remembered for being the most thoughtful and giving person, always putting others first. She was always sending treats home with people or sending thoughtful cards. Joan showed up everywhere with a little snack or gift. She was a phenomenal cook and a gracious host. Holidays and family celebrations were a feast with fancy china and left no detail overlooked. Talent in the kitchen also resulted in countless cakes for every special occasion, including weddings. She loved making her famous lemon poppy seed bread and angel food cakes, along with having something special for any other event. Joan loved canning vegetables from Joe's garden, including her famous dilly beans.
Joan worked for many years at Premier Financial (La-Tec) Credit Union, serving as branch manager of the Chilton office until her retirement.
After retirement the opportunity to babysit for her grandson, Jacob, gave her great joy. As he grew up she was also sure to watch Jacob play baseball or attend his concerts at every opportunity. An occasional trip to Froggs ice cream was always a hit. Joan took pride in her flower gardens and making the landscaping perfect. Her house was decorated for every season. She enjoyed adventures with Joe, with lots of bus trips around the country and occasional trips to the casino with family and friends. Playing Sheepshead was always an enjoyable way to spend time with friends, including being part of one group for over 60 years.
Joan’s faith and helping others was very important to her. She was heavily involved with St. Charles and St. Mary's parishes. She was an active member of the Christian Mothers, loved helping with decorating the church, assisting hand stitch quilts, and was instrumental in the church picnic, chicken and pork chop dinners. Every year Joan was happy to do lots of baking for the bake sale to help raise money for the church and school.
Joan is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joseph; children: Mike (Amy) Thielman, Dan (Tracy) Thielman, and Joe (Linda) Thielman; grandchildren: Jacob Thielman, Nathan (Angela) Kleinhans, Brian Kleinhans, Phillip (Stacy) Kleinhans; great-grandchildren: Ryan Kleinhans and Lily Kleinhans; siblings: Don (Helen) Hanke, Jim (Barb) Hanke, and Kathy Matthaidess; in-laws: Ronnie Thielman, LeRoy (Carol) Thielman, and Millie Thielman; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Evelyn; a grandchild: Nick Kleinhans; Joe's parents: Lloyd and Mary Ann Thielman; and in-laws: E. David Matthaidess II, Clarice Ziegelbauer, and Marvin Thielman.
A very sincere thank you to the staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital who helped care for Mom. Additional thanks to Fr. Jude for the Anointing of the Sick, and to Bishop David Ricken for his special visit and blessings in her last hour.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church (N10232 Hwy G) in Marytown. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Friday, August 21, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton, and from 9:30 am until 10:45 am at the church on the day of service. Joan will be laid to rest at the St. Charles Cemetery in Charlesburg following the Funeral Mass.
