Judith K "Judy" Sommerhalder

Stockbridge WI

Judith “Judy” Sommerhalder, age 76, of Stockbridge, died at her home, surrounded by her family, on October 8, 2023, after her most recent battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born February 4, 1947, daughter of the late John, Sr. and Margaret Sweere. On November 14, 1970, she married Kenneth “Hummer” Sommerhalder at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert.

Judy worked as an accountant at Suttner Accounting in Chilton for 58 years, and recently giving that up was among one of her greatest heartbreaks in life. Her dedication extended to a love of animals that she showed both at home and through years of her time volunteering at the Eastshore Humane Society. Her family received her unconditional love and devotion. She never missed an opportunity to cheer at sporting events, join the audience at choir and band concerts, or enjoy musicals when her grandchildren were involved. She was a pistol; an independent woman with a spitfire personality. She regularly attended church at St. Mary in Stockbridge, and looked forward to her monthly “Widow Wednesdays”; the New Beginnings Dinner Group. She kept a close bond with her sisters throughout her life and enjoyed weekends spent with them whether it was traveling or just a get together at one of their homes playing cards.

Judy is survived by her son: Scott (Debra Lynn Ashauer) Sommerhalder; her grandchildren: Jade, Tomas (special friend, Sydney), and Pearl Sommerhalder; her sisters: Beatrice Berrens, Margaret “Toots” (Al) Krueger, Anita (Fred) Harder; her brothers:  Duane (Rosie) Sweere, Robert (Mary) Sweere, and Henry (Donna) Sweere; sisters-in-law: Diane (Mike) Welsh, Christine Sommerhalder, Jolene (Steve) Berg, and Virginia Sweere; and a special friend: Harvey Schaefer.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Sommerhalder; her parents: John, Sr. and Margaret (Dykhoff) Sweere; a sister: Alice (Eugene) Vercauteren; brothers: Clarence Sweere, John, Jr. (Ramona) Sweere, Eugene Sweere, and James Sweere; a brother-in-law: Mark Ritzke; and her four-legged friend: Frosty.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at St. Mary of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church (120 Davis St.) in Stockbridge, with Fr. Michael Betley presiding. Friends may call from 3:30 pm until 5:15 pm at the church on the day of service.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Anita, Harvey, and Thedacare Home Hospice for their special care over the past few months.

At the time of the service and following, there will be a link availabile above for those wishing watch a memorial video or see pictures of the flowers and gifts given to the family.

In lieu of flowers, any gifts given to the family will be donated to the Eastshore Humane Society.

Condolences

Sorry to hear about Judy. She was always so friendly. Since we were close in age she would be with me on the farm. Again deepest condolences.

I have fond memories of Judy at adoption events and the Mardi Paws fundraiser. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always a loving presence.

Janet McCord (friend and Eastshore pal) 2023-10-18 17:29:56

I was home this summer on vacation and ran into Judy at the 114 bar and Grill where she told me about her illness. My deepest sympathy and regards to Judy’s family, friends and classmates. She will definitely be missed as beautiful person as she was. I’m sure she’s in a better place with her family, and loved ones and is with Jesus

It was a privilege to know Judy these last 15 years. She was one of those "Salt of the Earth" people and will be greatly missed. Thank you Judy for all you did for the Shelter and her animals over so many years. You made a difference in this world.

Leigh Driessen (Friend through Eastshore Humane) 2023-10-13 20:23:38

Judy was my mentor as I entered the business world. She made everything look easy just by the smile on her face and easy going nature. Reading her story I can see she never lost her zest for life.

I had the pleasure of visiting with Judy several times when planning Mardi Paws. She was always a wonderful person and funny. I enjoyed the brief visits we had together. Rest in Peace. You will no doubt be missed by many.

My deepest sympathy to everyone. You said it well "she was a spitfire" but we always had a great time. I am so glad that I got to see her in July. We had a great time at work and outside of work. She was truly a great friend.
