Karl V Mathes

Chilton WI

Karl Mathes, 88, passed away at home on September 9, 2025, with his family by his side. He was the son of the late Selma and Lester Mathes, born in New Holstein on March 18, 1937.

Karl graduated from New Holstein High School. While in high school he joined the National Guard, serving four years. On September 12, 1959, he married Helen Weller. Karl passed away three days before celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary.

As a young man, Karl worked for the Schaubs Filling Station and ran a landscaping business on the side. Karl worked for Chilton Malt Co. for 32 years, retiring after heart surgery forced him to stop working. Once retired, Karl would take long walks around town, enjoying visits with the people he met along the way.

Karl was a simple person who enjoyed life. While always a fan, this last year he rarely missed a Packer or Brewer game. In his earlier years he bowled, but more for friendships than the competition. Karl’s greatest pleasures were traveling, both with friends and family. Many fond memories were made during summer trips with his children, and later with his grandchildren.

Karl took great pride in his home and yard. Throughout the winter he would design his flower gardens, and, as the sun got warmer, start planting his flowerpots before taking them outside when the weather was right. Karl could often be found outside, making sure his yard and flower gardens were blooming from early spring through fall. And no matter the weather, Karl always made sure the birds that visited his yard were well fed.

Karl is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter: Diane; sons: Gary (Jeannine) and Ken (Lisa); grandchildren: Nathan (Jane), Holly (Chris) VanAkkeren, Tyler (Jamie), Heather (Connor) Alexy; step-grandchildren: Marissa Hinz, Tyler Buechel, Adam Barts, and Amy Barts (Kyle); great-grandchildren: Bristen, Raya, Julian, Kinsley, and twins on the way; sisters: Bonnie (Roger) Kind and Candy (Edward) Mueller; a brother: Dennis; and in-laws: Rose (Russ) Knoth, Bob (Mary) Weller, Clarence (Barb) Weller, Art (Wanda) Weller, Mike (Peggy) Weller, and Francis (Judith) Weller.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents, Selma and Lester Mathes; daughter-in-law: MariKay Mathes; brother: Lester, Jr.; sister: Betty (Edward) Groh; Helen’s parents: Hildegard and Arnold Weller; and brother-in-law: Fr. Andre Weller.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 11:00 am until 12:45 am at the church on the day of service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in the name of Karl Mathes.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Dellaria, Julie, and the entire hospice team for their compassion, kindness and skilled care during this difficult time.
