LaVerne A Schmidt
Chilton, WI

LaVerne A. Schmidt, age 84, of Chilton, died on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.  She was born August 26, 1938 in Chilton, daughter of the late Gregory & Celestine (Wagner) Geiser.  LaVerne married Martin R. “Marty” Schmidt on October 17, 1956 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton.

Durning this time, LaVerne worked for Chilton Metal Products and later Tecumseh Engine in New Holstein, but never left the farm that she and her husband operated hand in hand in the Town of Charlestown until 1992.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Martin Catholic Parish where she was actively involved with the Christian Women and helped run the “Day to Day” operations of the church.  It was here that she also taught CCD for many, many years and lovingly guided families and youth to appreciate and live out their Christian faith.  In so doing, LaVerne also lived her faith by volunteering as a tutor at the Chilton Area Catholic School in Chilton.

Throughout her life, LaVerne made the most of everything God had blessed her with.  She was always kind and went out of her way to make delicious baked goods for friends and family; she was well known for making a mean pie crust and her cookies, but was renowned for her Angel Food that won rave reviews from anyone who received a large quantity of it around the Christmas Season.  She loved to tend to a very large garden and elicited the inexpensive help of her children to tend to and harvest the crops of the work of her hand.

As life moved on, LaVerne began the simple pleasures of life.  She especially enjoyed doing puzzles, visiting with those she loved, and relaxing with a good read.  She looked forward to moments with a good book or article, and spent hours pouring through the Words of Scripture in her Bible.

LaVerne loved her entire family without question, but was especially glad when she was called “Grandma”.  Time spent with her grandchildren teaching them the “tricks of the trade” through life, and the crafts and baking techniques she acquired through the years will be passed on for generations to come.

Survivors include her children:  Duane (Dawn) Schmidt, Cynthia Kilgas, Timothy (Pat) Schmidt, Gregory (Deb) Schmidt, Kevin (Yana) Schmidt; her grandchildren:  Benjamin (Anne), Brandon (Brooke), Zachary (Crystal), Joshua (JD), Justin, Chelsea, Joshua, Holly (Katie), Taylor (Kevin), Christian, Sarah, Rebecca, Danielle, Steven (Brooke) Samantha, Daniel, Nika; great grandchildren: Trae and fiancée Trinity, Olivia (Kale), Ariana, Marlie, Elijah, Drew, Evan, Ruby, Madelyn, Connor; great-great grandchild: Rosella; siblings:  Janice Gary, Harry (June) Geiser, Fr. Al Geiser, Donnie (Mary) Geiser; and her siblings-in-law: Shirley Geiser, Joan Schmidt, Eileen (Glenn) Beers, Richard (Audrey) Schmidt.  She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Marty; a son-in-law: John Kilgas; her brother: Michael Geiser; and her siblings-in-law: Bob Gary, Ronnie Schmidt, Darlene Koehler, Delbert Schmidt, Harvey Schmidt & Loa Ann Schmidt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with Rev. Jon Thorson officiating.  Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 and on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at the church from 10:00 am until 11:15 am.  Those wishing to view a live stream or archived recording of the service, or view flowers and gifts given to the family may do so by clicking HERE.

LaVerne’s family would like to thank everyone at St. Elizabeth Hospital and Willowdale for all of the loving care and attention that was given both to her and her entire family.
I remember LaVerne at St. Martin's growing up. We all became family there. She led the CCD program and taught us. I will never forget doing the living stations under her guidance. That helped to enhance my faith. She was always kind and involved in a faith filled way.
She will be missed by many.
Our sympathies to the entire family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. God's peace.

Your mother was always such a sweet thing. She would always remind me that she took care of me and my siblings when we were young. She was someone you knew would be at religion classes every Wednesday evening helping out wherever she could. My sympathy to all of the family.

I met LaVerne while working a Teens Encounter Christ TEC retreat. She openly shared her faith and love of God. I was impressed with how she related to youth and young adults with ease and true compassion. My prayers go out to the family
