Lucille "Lucy" Lakin
Chilton WI
Lucille “Lucy” Lakin, age 96, of Chilton, died on February 1, 2025, at Caring Hands Nursing Home in New Holstein. She was born July 18, 1928, daughter of the late John and Xenia (Chetovetz) Strizek. On December 14, 1946, she married Gordon G. Lakin in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
Graduating from FDL Senior High in 1945, Lucy received a scholarship to Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. She attended evening and summer classes at Marian College in Fond du Lac while working during the day, and graduated with a B.S. in Art Education in 1976. She was employed by the Fond du Lac School District as a kindergarten aide and audio visual artist for 26 years, retiring in 1990. She worked as a calligrapher at Kristmas Kringle Shoppe for some time as well. She moved from Fond du Lac to Chilton in March of 2001.
Blessed with many talents, as an avid artist, Lucy enjoyed painting, surprising many friends and relatives with paintings and portraits of pets. She was adept in a variety of crafts, wrote poetry, and created greeting cards on her computer. Lucy enjoyed singing with the choir at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert. Lucy also loved to read, sing and dance, traveling, and being with friends on short bus trips to the casino. She enjoyed ballroom dancing with the love of her life, Gordy. Because Lucy was a “people person,” she often took the opportunity to “pay it forward” by paying for a meal for a veteran, stranger, or friend. Her great sense of humor helped get her and others through trying times and lonely days.
Lucy is survived by her children: her daughter, JoAnne Johnson-Winer of Maui, Hawaii; her son, Michael (JoAnn) Lakin and their children: Todd (Mary) of Kaycee, Wyoming; great-grandchildren: Cheyenne (Justin) of Valders, Grant (Emily) of Appleton, Harlee of Kaycee, Wyoming; great-great-grandchildren: Ariana and Dustin, Jr. of Valders, and Brooks of Appleton; her son, James (Sue) Lakin, of Abrams, Wisconsin and their children: Matthew (Brigid) of Walnut Creek, California, and Rebecca (Bill) Gullan of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren: James and Will of Walnut Creek, California, and Grace and Winston of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her son, Nicholas (Deb) Lakin of Winona, Minnesota and their children: Nicole and Alexandra (Jose) of Winona, Minnesota; and one sister: Louise Schmitz of Temecula, California.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Gordy; four brothers: Steve, Wesley, John, and George Strizek; and three sisters: Mary Schmunk, Esther Frick, and Kathryn Greshay; sons-in-law: James W. Johnson and Rabbi Lawrence A. Winer; a grandson: Josh; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 10:00 am until 11:15 am at the funeral home on the day of service. Lucy will be laid to rest at St. Charles Cemetery in Taychedah at 3:00 pm that day. At the time of the service and following, there will be a link available for those wishing to watch a memorial video, or see pictures of the flowers and gifts given to the family on their website page provided through wietingfuneralhome.com

Aunt Lucy taught me to savor the sweet things in life. We would go out to lunch and even if we hadn’t finished our meal, we would order a dessert with two forks. Cheese cake, fried ice cream, or her favorite: black cherry ice cream. Thank you Aunt Lucy. Every one should have an Aunt Lucy.

Dear Mike and all, I am so saddened by your mom's passing but as she told me on the phone just a couple days before, she just wanted to be out of her suffering and be with Gordy. We all know he was the light of her life! Your mom was such an extraordinary person. It gave me such joy to be around her. She was so sweet, thoughtful and caring, and always very loving. I will always cherish the painting she gave me, along with the sketches, poems and book. Such a talented lady! Gordy was the last of the Lakin cousins in that generation, and now Lucy, as his spouse is gone. Maybe I will be able to keep in touch with you Mike, if I run across any family photos or memorabilia I think you might enjoy. Sending my heartfelt condolences to you, your siblings and spouses and children. Do your best to carry on the zest for life that Gordy and Lucy had. And thank you so much for calling me. That was very thoughtful of you. Love to all, Rhonda Whetstone, granddaughter of Lenora Lillian Lakin Wisconsin Rapids, WI

I would like to say I was so fortunate as to be able to become acquainted with Lucy and Gordy Lakin and their wonderful family when I was quite young and our parents took us children with them out to visit as they were friends of Lucy and Gordy. We enjoyed every visit that we had and will never forget our memories there forever. I remember the little cats in the barn and their back entryway, but most of all I will never forget almost being stampeded by the cows.( me and my brothers Steve and Brian) remember it as the day we almost died!) We will never forget their boys playing their musical instruments and how talented they were. Each time we went there, Lucy and Gordy were so kind and friendly and our parents would talk for hours with them, and Nick would take us out to the barn, which wasn’t really me at all, but I wasn’t going to be left behind with my brothers going outside on an adventure, I didn’t want to miss!! (except of course, being chased by the cows!) I remember what a stunning couple they always made matching each other always and their hair just so. I just want to say that I want to thank the entire family for all the wonderful memories that were made and would not have been made without such great parents. I do have to say one thing I didn’t know was that Lucy was such a great artist and was involved in a lot, including going to school later in life. For whatever reason I assumed she was a stay at home wife and mother because everything was always just so and now thinking back I have no idea how she was able to accomplish everything she did in her lifetime. Sending all my love.Joann who might think it to know very well and also to Mike, Jim, and Nick. You all will always be a part of me and my memories. May your mom rest in peace. She’s so deserves it.??love, Lana

My sympathies to Lucy's family. Lucy and I did many weddings and funerals together when I was an organist at St. Louis Catholic Church in FondduLac. She had the most lovely voice and beautiful smile. I've been so very blessed to have known such a special woman.

Lucy and I have been friends for many years. She was so full of life! We always made to time to call her and stop to see her whenever we were back in Wisconsin. Either at Mcky D's or at her home. We will miss her, but we will cherish the book she gave us for Christmas. Randy hangs the portrait of Brett Farve she made for his 60th birthday with pride. Lucy will always be remembered as a beautiful and graceful woman she was. Our deepest sympathies to her entire family. Randy and Debbie Florida
