MariKay P Mathes
Chilton, WI

MariKay Patricia Mathes, age 52, of Chilton, died on July 17, 2020 at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, North Dakota after a tragic car accident. MariKay, born on April 2, 1968 in Norway, Upper Michigan was raised by Barbara (Chapman) and Steven De Kerf Sr., along with the late Edward Grailer.

MariKay graduated from Kingsford High School and continued her education in the Fond du Lac and Appleton areas, attaining degrees in both English and Cosmetology. She was the district operations manager for Cost Cutters in East Central Wisconsin, overseeing approximately twenty salons. MariKay wrapped up her cosmetology career as the district manager for all the Shear America salons in Wisconsin.

It was at Pla-Mor Lanes where MariKay found her soulmate, Gary Mathes. After many years working part-time for Gary, the two got to know each other better, eventually falling in love and marrying on September 6, 2009. MariKay joined Gary full-time at Pla-Mor Lanes, and together they ran the day-to-day business, both playing to their strengths. The lanes were Gary’s and the kitchen was MariKay’s. They often jokingly reminded one another that they had their ‘own’ areas. MariKay also just happened to be a very good bowler herself. She was always involved with Men’s and Women’s State Tournament and Men’s National Tournament. In 2017, she received an award for bowling in her 20th USBC National Tournament.

If you did not see MariKay at Pla-Mor there was a good chance she was outdoors, as this was her happy place. She enjoyed golfing, hiking, watching animals, fishing, and going for walks. Every summer MariKay and Gary took a vacation to Yellowstone National Park where MariKay enjoyed watching wolves and bears for hours on end, without any regard for time. Watching wolves in the wild brought a sense of peace to her heart. MariKay had a love for all animals. She would feed the stray cats outside of Pla-Mor, and she even had a small shelter outside during the winter to provide a warm and safe place for them. When MariKay took the grandkids fishing for the first time it was one of her biggest joys.

MariKay always put others first, and family was her greatest priority. Her strong-willed personality was the foundation that held her family together. Family and friends could expect a phone call if they did not stop in and visit often enough for her liking. Every December you could expect a Christmas letter letting the whole family know the highlights of her year. Her most famous quote was “My kids are my pride and joy, I would do anything and everything I can for them”. MariKay was a woman who had a plethora of glitter and sparkle, and a smile that could make anyone’s day better.

MariKay will be greatly missed by her husband, Gary; her children: Marissa (Josh) Hinz, Tyler Buechel, Nathan (Jane) Mathes, and Holly (Chris) VanAkkeren; grandchildren: Bristen VanAkkeren, Raya VanAkkeren, and Julian Mathes; mother: Barbara (Steve) De Kerf; brothers:  David (Athena) Grailer, Michael (Terri) Grailer, Patrick De Kerf, Steve (Jessica Keyes) De Kerf, Jr., Derek (Tabitha Parker) Gagne; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Diane Mathes, Ken (Lisa) Mathes; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Karl and Helen Mathes; nieces and nephews, Eddie, Casey, Nikki (Matt), Kalia, Tyler, Jonathon, Tyler, Caitlin, Daphne, Heather, and Tyler; other friends and extended family.

A time of visitation will be on Saturday August 1, 2020 at Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W Main St.) in Chilton from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM.
Although we lost contact years ago, I thought of MariKay from time to time; which always brought to mind fond memories. The sadness I feel pales in comparison to the pain those close to her are feeling. My thoughts go out to all the family and friends of MariKay. She will not be forgotten...she was one cool lady.

Gary ~~ sending healing prayers and comforting hugs with deepest sympathy as you remember MariKay. It was truly a pleasure knowing MariKay when someone as special as she lived the way she did in our Community. Her legacy is sure to live on through the many lives she touched. MariKay made the best Pulled Pork sandwiches ever...and whenever I see that on any Menu now I will think of her.
