Mary Ann Freund
Sherwood WI
Mary Ann Freund, age 87, of Sherwood, died peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna surrounded by family. She was born June 5, 1938, in Fond du Lac, daughter of the late Arthur and Eunice (Gerhartz) Nennig.
Most of her childhood was spent in Chilton. She attended the local high school where she began helping out in the school office as a student. Following graduation, Mary Ann embarked on her career with the Chilton School District. Her dedication and hard work led her to the position of administrative assistant to the superintendent until her retirement. Mary Ann took great pride in her work.
While working at the local soda shop, "The Melody" her family ran, Mary Ann met a new young stranger in town, Douglas Freund. On November 1, 1958, they married and shared a life filled with love, laughter, and family. They built their forever home in the village of Sherwood, where they enjoyed a beautiful hillside view with amazing sunsets. The couple shared a love for the outdoors spending hours tending to their garden and landscaping along with taking walks together. As their children grew they added family camping trips creating lasting memories and passing on a tradition. They found joy later in life visiting their children's permanent campsites, sitting by the fire, sharing stories and enjoying time with grandchildren.
Mary Ann was a lifelong member of St. John Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sherwood, where she was not only a devoted parishioner but also an active member of the Christian Mothers' group, contributing her time and energy to countless church activities. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she found peace and strength in her church community.
Mary Ann was an exceptional cook and baker, especially when it came to creating holiday treats. She had a special knack for baking cookies and candies that delighted her family and friends during the holidays. Her sweet tooth was legendary, and her desserts became a beloved part of family gatherings.
In her free time, Mary Ann enjoyed a variety of activities that kept her active and engaged with those around her. A passionate lover of crafts, she found joy in sewing projects, cardmaking and scrapbooking. Mary Ann also participated in bowling leagues for many years with family, friends and co-workers. Reading, card games and puzzle building filled many hours in her later years.
Family was at the heart of everything Mary Ann did. She cherished the moments when her entire family could gather around the dinner table, sharing meals, memories, and laughter. She was always there for her children and grandchildren, offering support, love, and guidance. Whether it was a holiday meal or a simple get-together, Mary Ann’s home was a place of comfort and joy for those who were lucky enough to be a part of her circle.
Mary Ann will be deeply missed by her children: Lisa Wachowiak, Carrie (Guy) Gossens, and Sue (Tom) Herrmann; her grandchildren: Brandon Freund, Emily (Tony) Tippett, Macey (Tom) Woolhouse, and Parker Herrmann; great-granddaughter: Ren; her siblings: Art (Mary Ellen) Nennig, Barb (Bud) Wieting, Irene (Kirby) Merz, and Cheryl (Peter) Bakke; and her siblings-in-law: Don R. Jensen, Dennis Schaff, Dolores (Denny) Blake, Bonnie (Mike) Breigvogel, and Lloyd Jones. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Douglas; her siblings: Arline Jensen, Doris Schaff, and Paula (Duane) Dubois; and her siblings-in-law: Gerald Freund, Duane Freund, and Judy Jones.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Paul Home and especially Dariya, St. Paul Hospice Case Manager, for their love, care, and compassion during Mary Ann’s final days.
