Nona Mae Gehl, age 88, of Hilbert, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, on February 13, 2025, at her home. She was born on February 16, 1936, daughter of the late Hugo and Bernice (Wettstein) Lex. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Nona graduated from Stockbridge High School and went to technical college, becoming a milk tester. She loved the farmers she tested for; she could remember all of their names and their children as well. Nona was kind and thoughtful, an avid reader, and everyone that met her loved her. She was a spiritual woman, a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert, and she never said unkind words about anyone.
Nona is survived by her children: Terry (Valerie Flowers-Gehl) Gehl, Steven Gehl (significant other, Sandra Mazza), Janet (Marc) Vincent, and Jean (Paul) Kuepper; grandchildren: Coty (Alyssa) Gehl, Amanda (Jesse Pace) Cantu-Pace, Sara Cantu, Joseph (Marie) Schneider, Kiley Schneider, Lexy Mae (Nicholas) Eiting, and Kalvin Kuepper; great-grandchildren: Jordan Voeltz, Harper Gehl, Aurora Pace, Nova Pace, Alrick Stanhope, Chase Eiting, and another on the way; and her extended Gehl family.
Nona was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Bernice; and a grandson: Benjamin Schneider.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert. Friends may call from 11:00 am until 1:15 pm at the church on the day of service. Nona will be laid to rest at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Hilbert after the funeral ceremony. At the time of the service and following, there will be a link available above for those wishing to watch a live stream or archived recording of the service, watch a memorial video, or see pictures of the flowers and gifts given to the family.

Sorry for your loss. Nona was a great lady. I enjoyed working with Nona for the crop insurance. We had so many laughs and lots of coffee. She was always so friendly whenever you seen her. Enjoyed playing sheepshead with her. She will always be remembered for her kindness.

What a beautiful soul. I've known Nona since childhood, and can't ever remember her without a smile. I'm so happy we were able to do lunch these last years and reminisce. I saw her shortly after Christmas, and couldn't believe her wonderful spirit. God bless you Nona. I know there is a special place for you.
