Norman A Pautz
Chilton, WI

Norman A. Pautz, age 98, of Chilton, died on January 17, 2023, at Century Ridge Assisted Living in Chilton. He was born December 21, 1924, in Brillion, son of the late Elmer and Hilda (Bartel) Pautz. Norman was a graduate of Chilton High School and married Barbara Krause of Webster, WI, on June 10, 1950. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. They enjoyed 72 years of wedded bliss. He was a lifetime member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton. Norman was proud to serve his country in Europe for the cause of freedom during World War II for two and a half years. Upon returning, he completed his college education with a B.S. in Agriculture Education from River Falls State University and a M.S. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. His teaching began at Suring High School, followed by Chilton High School and seventeen more years as an Adult Farm Trainer for Fox Valley Technical College. He taught agriculture for thirty-seven years, most all of it to the farm families of Calumet County.

Norman was a person of diverse interests, believed in the art of penmanship and wrote hundreds of letters to family and friends. His writing culminated in two biographical sketches of life growing up on the farm entitled “I Remember When” and “I Remember Some More”. He is well remembered for co-authoring “The New Chilton Tales”, an update of Chilton’s city history. All books are available at the city library.

Norm was especially adept at photography and enjoyed nature through the lens of a camera, and was especially known for his enlarged prints of butterflies. He loved all of the outdoors with its trees, flowers, and landscapes, having spent a number of years on Earl Tree Board for the city of Chilton. Most of all he loved to fish Wisconsin and for thirty years in Canada in the pursuit of walleyes. His love of nature was superseded only by his love for family, children, grandchildren, and friends. He lived life with a sense of humor and a sense of purpose. He will be missed by many.

Norman is survived by his wife, Barbara, and four children: Steve (Linda) Pautz of New Berlin, Susan (Bob) Gazda of Ormond Beach, FL, Kristine Pautz of Brillion, and James (Barb) Pautz of Neenah; eight grandchildren: Noel (Ryan) Deibert, Vanessa (Scott) Ulfig, Lisa (Chad) Smits, Sara (Greg) Janiuk, Nicholas Makouske (Michelle Williams), Richard (Laura) Makouske, Leah (Bo) Sahr, and Luke Pautz; nine great-grandchildren; siblings: David (Sue) Pautz, Vernice (Earl) Krueger, Jeanette Mauer, and Blanche Wasmuth; and many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Hilda; siblings: Leroy Pautz and Lester Pautz; Barbara’s parents: Reuben and Catherine (Peterson) Krause; and in-laws: Daniel Mauer, Dale Wasmuth, and Gene and Frances Krause.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 27, 2023, at Ebenezer United Church of Christ (44 Washington St.) in Chilton. Friends may call from 11:00 am until 12:45 pm at the church on the day of service.
