Robert M Ruffing
Menasha, WI

Robert Michael Harry Ruffing, age 81, of Menasha, died at his residence on September 10, 2022. He was born November 9, 1940 in Appleton, WI, the youngest of seven children of Raymond Ruffing, Sr. and Theresa (Weber) Ruffing. Bob attended grade school at St. Mary’s in Stockbridge and graduated from Stockbridge High School, Class of 1959.

Bob graduated from Madison Barber College in Rockford, IL, and apprenticed one season in Mercer, WI, where he had several unique experiences while learning his trade. He once cut the hair of General Eisenhower. He also cut the hair of Ralph Capone, brother to the infamous gangster, Al Capone. During lunch one day at a local tavern, eight Cadillacs pulled up and a group of men dressed in suits came into the bar. After ordering, one man told the bartender, “And get the Little Clipper anything he wants.” Bob operated Ruffing’s Barber Shop in Menasha for over a decade before retiring from the barber trade in the Beatles era of long hair styles. He worked at Miller Electric Mfg. Co. in Appleton, retiring after 23 years of service.

Bob had a great sense of humor and was easygoing. He suffered a substantial stroke at age 52; his perseverance, dedication, and commitment to hard work enabled a remarkable recovery.

Bob has always been an avid sports fan who closely followed the Brewers, Packers, and Badgers. One of his fondest memories was attending the 1957 and 1958 World Series at Milwaukee County Stadium, where his Milwaukee Braves won in ’57, but lost in ’58.

Bob loved the 33 years he lived on Lake Winnebago’s north shore where he enjoyed fishing for walleye and spearing sturgeon. He adored nature and animals, and cultivated an incredible and abundant home garden every summer. Bob enjoyed annual trips back to Mercer with his family, especially to see fall colors. More than anything, Bob immensely enjoyed spending time with his three children, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Bob was an active member of Holy Angels Parish in Darboy for over 30 years and in recent years returned to his home parish of St. Mary of the Seven Dolors, Stockbridge.

Bob is survived by his children: two sons, Jeffrey (Karen) Ruffing, Sr. (Hollandtown) and John (Lisa) Ruffing (Menasha), and one daughter, Mary Ellen (Trevor) Briedé (Lake Oswego, OR); seven grandchildren: Jeffrey (Raeann) Ruffing, Jr., Joseph Ruffing (special friend, Casie), Benjamin Ruffing, Molly Ruffing, Alexandria Ruffing (fiancé, Logan), Elijah Ruffing, and Izac Ruffing; two great-grandchildren: Perry and Bennett Ruffing; his ex-wife and friend: Ellen Ruffing; siblings: Rose Miller, Raymond Ruffing, Jr., Helen (Tom) Maciulski, identical twin Richard (Julie) Ruffing; sister-in-law: Alice Ruffing; and many nieces and nephews. His special friends Buffy and Jody will miss him dearly (meow).

Bob was preceded in death by his loving Mother and Father; eldest brother Edward Ruffing; brother Charles Ruffing; brother-in-law Robert Gember; brother-in-law Mel Miller; sister-in-law Delphine “Blondie” (Hostettler) Ruffing; father-in-law and mother-in-law Alois and Velma Fahrenkrug; brother-in-law Roger Fahrenkrug; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Elmer and Delores Ellis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at St. Mary of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church (120 Davis St.) in Stockbridge. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton, and from 9:30 am until 10:45 am at the church before service. Vigil prayers will take place following visitation on Friday evening.

Teresa & Chuck Ruffing (Nephew ) - Sept. 22, 2022

Richard and Julie, I send my sympathy for your loss.

Judy Woelfel (New Holstein) - Sept. 20, 2022

I was saddened to read that Robert has passed away. I am recently retired from the insurance company next door to Roberts cottage on Midway. I was the front desk receptionist there. Robert would stop in each month and we would chat. He often talked about his kids and grandkids. He was a delightful man with a huge heart! Sending my deepest sympathy to all of you.

Mary Jo Hansel (Friend) - Sept. 20, 2022
