Rose Mary Woelfel
New Holstein WI
Rose Mary (Heimann) Woelfel, age 103, of New Holstein died peacefully at the Woelfel homestead on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. She was born on December 16, 1921, in the Heimann homestead, in the Town of Charlestown, the 5th of 10 children of William and Mary Heimann. She first met her future husband, Linus Woelfel, in first grade at St. Martin Catholic School. They didn’t know it then, but it was the beginning of a love story that carried on for decades and continues through the lives of their family today. Rose Mary enjoyed playing tennis while attending St. Mary Springs Academy. Rose Mary was a devoted wife and mother and had a green thumb in the garden. She’d say “just stick it in the dirt” whenever anyone asked. She watched the sun rise and set, birds all day, every day, especially the cardinals. Rose Mary also was an extraordinary seamstress and cook, known for her dill pickles and German specialties, passing on her knowledge to generations.
Rose Mary was a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary 3153, a Red Cross Blood Donor and volunteer. She was a member of St. Martin Church Christian Mother’s Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella, and a 75-year member of the Catholic Knights Fraternal Organization. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the Salvatorian Mission in New Holstein and spending quiet time praying at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Good Shepherd Parish Catholic Church. Rose Mary was a notorious card shark, who enjoyed playing and teaching a wicked game of Spite & Malice (she’d hold back those twos!) or Sheepshead. Happy Hour was an institution with Rose Mary, and by
3 pm you’d find a gathering having an Old Fashion or Blue Moon with her, and she would critique who made the best (or the worst). There wasn’t an illness or a sadness or even if you were just heading towards bed, that a glass of blackberry brandy couldn’t cure or ease you into sleep. She could make you laugh by the turn of her head, with a glint in her eye. Her sense of humor always warmed hearts, and her compassion and strength was her gift.
Survivors include her children, James (Susie Quillen) Woelfel of Holt, MI, Ronald W. (Helen) Woelfel of Green Valley, AZ, Kathleen (Bob) Arndt of Malone, Eunice (Daniel) Buretta of Fond du Lac, Larry (Doreen) Woelfel of Chilton, Ellen (Tom) Lidtke of West Bend, Roger (Cathy) Woelfel of New Holstein, Dori (Jim) Schmitz of Elkhart Lake, and Nancy (Robert Grossbard) Woelfel of Denver, CO; 16 grandchildren: Paulette, Scott, Brian, Brenda, Brandon, Tony, Joe, Jill, Mike, Katrina, Jason, Jonathan, Caryn, Neil, Mason, and Barry; step-grandchildren: Heidi, Caitlin, and William; 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Rose Mary was preceded in death by her husband Linus, her parents, her in-laws Lawrence and Helen (Sukowaty), son DuWayne, son-in-law Robert Hodgden, daughter-in-law, Kathie Woelfel and her son, John, sisters and brothers, Hildegard (Victor) Geiser, Agnes (Harold) Schmitz, Joe (Louise) Heimann, Angela (Harvey) Mathes, Theresa (Alphonse) Buechel, Clarissa (Hilary) Gebhart, Clarence (Marie) Heimann, Delores (Leo) Krebsbach, Germaine (Art) Koehler, sisters-in laws Apolonia (Roman) Reiser, Emeline (Orville) Klauck, brothers-in-law, Winrich (Beatrice)(Helen) and Ozzie (Dolores) Woelfel.
Funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon on Monday, January 27, 2025 at St. Martin Heritage Park, N3298 Cty T, New Holstein with Dcn. Pat Knier & Joe Zenk officiating. Entombment will be at Knollwood Mausoleum with her beloved Linus. A time of visitation will be held at St. Martin Heritage Park from 10:00 am until 11:45 am. At the time of the service and following, there will be a link available above for those wishing to watch a livestream or archived recording of the service, watch a memorial video, or view flowers and gifts given to the family.
Thank you to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their extraordinary care.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in memory of Rose Mary Woelfel at St. Martin Heritage Park, where she was a lifetime member.

Rose Mary and Linus flew out to California formy ordination in 1977. I had visited the homestead several time in my seminary days. They continued to visit over the years. What great people. Rose Mary’s strength of character even in sickness is inspiring. I appreciated her FaceTiming me to catch up. Rest in peace, my dear. I have offered Masses for her and the family and will continue to do so. Much love to all.

Only met Rose Mary twice. She had a twinkle in her eye that said I love life and after viewing the gallery, the babies were a high light. Thank you Kathy for inviting us to meet your mother.
