Samuel L Schmitz
Hilbert WI
Samuel L. Schmitz, age 67, of Hilbert, was peacefully welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on March 16, 2025, while at home with his family by his side. He was born February 18, 1958, in Kaukauna, son of the late Elmer, Sr. and Doris (Cullen) Schmitz. He married Kelly Riemer on June 29, 1996, at St. John Catholic Church in St. John. They were blessed in life with two children: a son, Trevor, and a daughter, Shania.
Sam purchased Schmitz Brothers 2, with his brother, JR, on November 12, 1983, and then took sole ownership and owned it for over 41 years. During that time he also bought 57 Saloon, and was a member of the Calumet County Tavern League.
Sam started going to the Indy 500 when he was a kid and went every year until Trevor's graduation which fell on the same day. His favorite driver to watch was Dale Earnhardt and he quit watching after Dale’s tragic accident. Kelly and Sam enjoyed their "breakfasts" at City Limits and Redliner in Menasha when they went to "pick up groceries.” Sam was an exceptional pool player and always claimed he was born on a pool table.
Samuel is survived by his wife, Kelly; their children: Trevor Schmitz and Shania Schmitz (Special Friend, Hayden Russell); siblings: TJ Schmitz, Bridget Bornemann, Diana Krueger, Donna (Willie) Schad, JR (Sherry) Schmitz; and in-laws: Tom Vande Hey, Mary Kay (Bob) Rosin, Connie (Tom) Klotz, Norb Mangin, Sheri (Bob) Davidovich, Lynn (Troy) Stiefvater, Tom (Kelly) Riemer, Mark (Michelle) Riemer, Kim (Darrell) Buss, Keith (Laura) Riemer, Joe Riemer, Mike (Rachel) Riemer; a godchild: Shana Delcollo; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer, Sr. and Doris Schmitz; a sister: Sedona Vande Hey; Kelly’s parents: Roger and Delores Riemer; in-laws: Keith Bornemann, Butch Krueger, and Sandy Mangin; and a niece: Melissa Bliske.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at St. Mary Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert. Friends may call from 9:30 am until 12:45 pm at the church prior to service. At the time of the service and following, there will be a link available for those wishing to watch a live stream or archived recording of the service, watch a memorial video, or see pictures of the flowers and gifts given to the family on their website page provided through wietingfuneralhome.com
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in the name of Samuel Schmitz. Cards and memorials can be sent to the Wieting Family Funeral Home c/o Samuel Schmitz 411 W. Main St. Chilton, WI 53014
Sam’s family extends a special thanks to Froedtert Health, Ascension Healthcare, Calumet County Hospice, and the close friends and family that helped take care of Sam.

Condolences
Dear Kelly and Family, I knew Sammy for a long time (high school). Lots of memories from those old days, and later rarely revisited Hilbert without stopping in for a meal at the restaurant and Sam was always there, a part of Hilbert. I'm sorry for your loss, sad that he had to leave so soon.

Very sorry to hear about losing Sam. Condolences to Kelly, Trevor, and Shania. Schmitz Brothers 2 was my first real job. Sam loved the way I worked, and I loved having him as a great boss. Even after quitting, he let me make extra cash cleaning broasters on Saturdays. He was also the one to give me my first Kessler and Coke. I hope you read this and know I DEFINITELY would have come to say goodbye to him, but didn’t hear until today. Sorry again to hear this bad news.

Wish we could of had a few more rounds, but sometimes that's how the dice roll! RIP my friend My condolences to the family especially Kelly and Bridget????????

Sending my sympathies ~ Losing a parent is hard, Shania & Trevor. I'll pray for heart, peace and comfort. A memory I have of Sammy was his willingness to sponsor our summer co-ed league at Officials Bowl the summers of 2010-14 -- our team consisted of Connor Winarski who always volunteered to go up to Schmitz Bros for a drink while he'd ask Sammy for sponsorship -- we were always told "yes" :)

My sympathies to Kelly & all of Sam’s family. Years ago Sam asked me to bartend with him at the Supper Club & sometimes I did a lunch adventure with him. Those are memories I will always cherish, along with always wiping down the bar, making sure every drop of alcohol was out of the bottle, & making sure the money was always facing the same way in the til. Sam, it was always a pleasure working with you, and may you now rest in peace my friend.

I first got to know Sam when I helped his mom, Doris with his dad Elmer. Sam always gave me crap because he knew I loved it. I had many great times with Sam and the entire Schmitz family at weddings, birthday parties, Christmas, and any other family events they included me in. I spent many nights drinking old fashions, and eating surf and turf at Brother 2. Sam and Kelly were always great behind the bar and in the kitchen. RIP Sam. To Kelly and the entire Schmitz family, you have my deepest sympathy.

I will always remember the first time I saw/met Sam. It was way back in the 60's when his dad Elmer installed the pool table in my Dad's tavern, Keuler's Tavern in Stockbridge and also all the times having a great steak dinners at the restaurant. They are great memories for me as I got to know the Schmitz family/business from then until 1984 when Dad sold the tavern and then at the restaurant. My deepest sympathy to all of Sam's family.

Condolences to Sam's family and many friends. He was a man of a few words, with a dry sense of humor. To know him, was to love him. He and Kelly both had big beautiful families, along with their two wonderful adult children. You could feel the love amongst them always. He will be greatly missed. RIP Sam. GOD BLESS.
