Thomas D Schmitzer, Jr.
Chilton, WI

Thomas D. “Tom” Schmitzer, Jr. age 62, of Chilton died on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, in his home, surrounded by family.  He was born in Appleton on June 23, 1957, son of Mildred “Millie” (Hietpas) Doern and the late Thomas D. Schmitzer, Sr.

Tom married his best friend Kathleen “Kathy” Phalen on October 30, 1976, and together they were a shining example of what it meant to love and be loved.  Their strong partnership and marriage went on to create three beautiful children and one grandson whom Tom referred to as his greatest accomplishments.

Tom and Kathy’s union gave way to a future in business, working side-by-side as they owned and operated Automotive Source in Chilton.  Their entrepreneurship continued when they partnered with their son and formed Schmitzer Industries which expands into Appleton and Madison.

Tom was passionate about the great outdoors, always looking forward to hunting excursions and fishing trips with buddies or boating with family on local lakes.  He had a deep appreciation for firearms and anything with a motor, and he was an avid golfer.  As a devoted Brewers, Bucks, Packers and NASCAR fan, Tom loved all sports and all things Wisconsin.

He was a man who endlessly cared for the well-being of others, and he always sought to help those who struggled in any way.  Above all else, he cared for and vigilantly looked after his family, making sure they felt safe, secure and loved.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen; his children: Thomas D. Schmitzer, III and his wife Rachel Llanas, Wendy Hein and her significant other Larry Propson, Jennifer Schmitzer and her husband Tim Sustarich; one grandchild: Alex Hein; his mother: Millie Doern; and two sisters: Lori (Schmitzer) Stangle & Teri (Schmitzer) Hindle.  He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.  Tom was preceded in death by his father Thomas and sister Debbi Schmitzer.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 28, 2020, at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2020, and on Thursday at the funeral home from 9:00 am until 10:45 am.  Burial will be at the Hillside Cemetery in Chilton.

Kathy I am so sorry to hear about Tom passing. I’m truly shocked that he is gone, my heart breaks for you and the kids. May you find comfort in the good times you shared with him. He always was a joker. I seem to remember a story that involved Noxzema and the toilet seat!
Take care.

I look at your picture and it brings back so many memories. From our foot races in the shop, to arm wrestle when neither would give up or admit that are arms felt like they were going to fall off. We played jokes on each other and called each other in a different voice to fool the other. From out hunting trips to going to the races, milw mile or our Nascar bus trip. And our one on one talks in that serious moment. My best friend, My buddy. Life will not be the same without you. I truly am going to miss you. Rest in peace Tom. I will see you again one day on the other side. Love you my brother

Tom and his family growing up on lake Winnebago. My twin Mark and I spent many summer days at aunt Millies. Across the street from grandparents Alex and Aurelia.
I enjoyed reconnecting at our family reunion a couple years ago. Tom and Kathy were so knowledgeable about our ancestors.
Prayers to the family, may Tom Rest In Peace.
